Last week our team kicked off the Holiday season with our annual BOTOX® Days event. The perfect treatment for party-prepped skin, Botox is a quick, easy way to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles. The three most popular spots for Botox include: 
– Horizontal forehead wrinkles
– Crow’s feet lines around the eyes
– The “11” (two vertical) lines between the eyebrows
If you’re a newbie to facial injections or want to brush up on your Botox smarts, we’re breaking down five of the most commonly asked questions about this anti-aging phenomenon.
1.    When is it time to get Botox?  What visible signs should I lookout for? 
As an overarching recommendation, adding injectables to your anti-aging arsenal is a completely personal decision. Many women start getting Botox between the ages of 25 to 35 when they notice deeper expression lines around the eyes and forehead. The only thing to consider when it comes to timing is that once wrinkles are deep, Botox can help soften them, but may not eliminate them completely. Whatever you choose, Botox will erase or fade lines and make a noticeable improvement at any age.
2.    How long does Botoxlast? 
Treatments last about three months. Once you have your initial session and continue to receive injections on a regular basis, you may start to not need as many units and transition to more of a “maintenance” plan to keep lines in check.
3.    What does Botox feel like? Will my face feel numb after I get it?
There’s no way around it, there’s a needle involved. On the bright side, the needles we use are small and thin, so patients say they feel a subtle prick, nothing super painful and much less impact than a regular shot. You shouldn’t feel any numbness or irritation.

4.    How long does an actual Botox session take? Is there anything I should do prior to or after getting Botox?
Botox is a super simple treatment. You lay back in a chair and the injection specialist will ask you what areas of your face bother you and what you would like treated. They will also give you recommendations to achieve your ideal look so there’s no guesswork involved. After a few strategically-placed injections you will be ready to go in 20 to 30 minutes max. 
Depending on your body, some patients notice slight bruising post-treatment. To help prevent bruising, stay away from pain medication prior to your treatment. Also avoid drinking for a few days before you get Botox. 
Aftercare is easy. Don’t lie down for four hours after the treatment and avoid rubbing or touching the area. That also means that for the first few hours, hats and headbands are a no-no. Avoid exercise the day you receive the treatment (about 12 hours on the safe side) and stay away from saunas, steam rooms or any other place or activity that can raise your body temperature. Some patients see results in as little as 72 hours, but wait a week for full results.
        
5.    Do I need to use a specific skincare line or products after a treatment? 
We recommend using medical-grade skincare products to your skin healthy and protected. Our team can help you choose a regimen fro our wide variety of product lines. but generally, a high-quality face cleanser, serum infused with Hyaluronic acid, hydrating night cream and and a SPF-packed moisturizer for daytime is recommended. Living in the dry AZ desert, keeping skin hydrated and plump is key to getting the most out of Botox.

The Shaw Spa offers up a variety of different skincare lines and products, but when asking around the office, Revision Skincare’s Intellishade anti-aging tinted moisturizer seemed to be a fan favorite of our fabulous Shaw Center women. This miracle moisturizer not only helps to conceal blemishes, but it reduces fine lines and wrinkles, as well as protects your skin with its UVA and UVB broad-spectrum coverage.
 
One of our former patients, Deborah, 61, recently started using Intellishade and was able to provide honest feedback to us. We asked, and she answered. Here is what she had to say about Intellishade’s formula.
 
Q:
What skincare products were you using prior and what objections did you have with them?
A:
I’ve used everything under the sun from drug store products like Neutrogena’s Rapid Wrinkle Repair and Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum, which I found only made my face appear oily and was far too greasy going on. Everything else I have experimented with has shown little to no results and does nothing for the complexion of my skin as far as color correction goes.
Q:
What do you look for in anti-aging skincare?
A:
To appear twenty years younger. Kidding. However, I do expect to see results after consistent use, at least with my finer lines and wrinkles. I want to be able to have a glow without appearing shiny, and ideally, I would like to know that it’s not just correcting, but also preventing further damage from occurring.
Q:
What was your first impression of Revision’s Intellishade moisturizer upon application?
A:
I was extremely impressed with how evenly and easily it went on. The “one shade fits all” promise really rang true. I noticed my redness disappear almost instantly, and it felt incredibly silky smooth on my skin. I couldn’t feel that I had anything on my face, but there was a noticeable difference in the evenness of my skin tone afterwards.
Q:
What was most ideal about this product and would you considering continuing to use it?
A:
I am always on the go, and I especially loved how fast and simple using Intellishade was. Because I am constantly out and about, it’s difficult for me to touch up, but I noticed with this product that the subtle color remained on my face evenly throughout my days without getting blotchy hours later.  My skin is also more sensitive, and a lot of other products have tended to cause minor breakouts, whereas this minimized my pores without seeming to clog them. I would absolutely plan on continuing to use this and am excited to see what it does for my lines and wrinkles once I’ve applied it more long term.

 Skin needling sounds like it would be extremely invasive, right? Well it doesn’t have to be! With Dermapen’s advanced technologies, there’s little to no pain when undergoing this treatment. The purpose of Dermapen is to stimulate natural collagen reproduction that will ultimately help to remove any visible signs of wrinkles, enlarged pores and other abnormalities.

Don’t Be Scared Of Scars
This advanced skin needling promotes scar-less healing, while still allowing for increased production of normal woven collagen. This treatment is very similar to fractional laser treatments, but without all the unwanted side effects and downtime. Additionally, Dermapen has actually been found to be more beneficial than chemical peels or microdermabrasion.
Traditional V. Dermapen
Unlike traditional skin needling rollers, Dermapen causes minimal damage to skin and very little discomfort and distress overall. Something More A”peel”ing
Skin Peels are incredibly beneficial to maintaining that beautiful complexion of yours. Chemical peels can help to repair skin damage caused by sun exposure, minimize facial lines, as well as improve the overall skin tone and texture of your face. Things that may affect the depth of a peel include the acid concentration in the peeling agent, the number of coats that are applied, and the amount of time allowed before the acid is neutralized.
There are different types of peels you can opt for depending on the area you want to target and intensity of results. AHAs are the most gentle of the three offered at The SHAW Center Spa. They simply aid in smoothing and brightening your skin through the use of a group of glycolic, lactic and fruit acids. This particular procedure has the shortest recovery time and takes 10 minutes or less.
TCAs penetrate the skin more deeply than AHAs and are the preferred chemical solution for darker-skinned patients. This particular peel treats fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigment problems.
The deepest penetrating peel offered at The SHAW Center Spa is Phenol, which treats more difficult skin problems, such as coarse facial wrinkles, precancerous growths and severely blotchy or damaged skin caused by sun exposure. Our center typically only uses this peel on the face and around the mouth.
Know The Difference…
Our center also offers Microdermabrasion, which is a non-surgical, exfoliating treatment for those wanting to rid themselves of age spots, freckles, fine lines, scars and rough skin. While this procedure has similar results as chemical peels, they do employ alternative techniques. A chemical peel achieves exfoliation through the use of chemical agents and is typically followed with a longer recovery process. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliating treatment, but does so by simply “sanding” with minimal to no downtime.
