In recent years eyebrows have become the face’s most important feature and one of the main focal points. They make the front page in celebrity news and dozens of different makeup lines have released products centralizing around the beauty of brows. Now if you have bad eyebrows there’s just simply no excuse for it. Find your favorite frame and pluck for perfection with these grooming go-tos.

Tame Time
Plucking your eyebrows in an effort to achieve the ideal shape can be challenging and at times even painful. However, the recent brow trends encourage a much fuller and thicker shape, which allows you to spend substantially less time tweezing.

We recommend choosing to tweeze after your shower since warm water tends to open the hair follicles and soften them, which in turn can help them to be extracted more easily.

Once you’ve determined your ideal shape, outline your arch using a brow pencil and remove only the hairs that fall above or below this outline. Avoid using a magnifying mirror to avoid over plucking. It’s the bigger picture that matters after all.

Fake It Till You Make It
After you’ve obtained that awesome natural arch, consider enhancing your brows further by filling them in with a color that complements your hair color. Use Benefit’s Brows-A-Go-Go or Anastasia Beverly Hill’s Brow Wiz to add definition, color and shape. Filling in those sparse areas will make the world of difference. Always have the most pigment intensity in the arch of the brow. This will help to create a more youthful look.

Finally, set your hairs with some brow wax or gel to ensure that that shape you’ve been working towards doesn’t loose its appeal throughout the day. You can even add a brow bone highlighter to further emphasize the look of your arch.

They say a little lipstick never hurt anyone, except in this case it might actually. In Europe, there are 1,373 chemicals that are banned from cosmetics. While in the United States, there are only 8. That’s not to say you need to completely pause the pout, but knowing what ingredients exactly are present in your powder is a good start to preventing harmful side effects. Let’s be honest, skimming that long list of ingredients of hard to pronounce words isn’t always our first instinct when shopping for new shadow, but at least knowing what to avoid is essential.

Formaldehyde  has been known to cause cancer, and it can be found in nail polish, hair gel, shampoos and lotions.

Triclosan, yet another harmful ingredient, can be found in soaps, deodorants and toothpastes and can disrupt the body’s natural hormone system.

Parabens, which are used as preservatives, are found in breast cancer tumors, as well as have been linked to reproductive toxicity. These are present and can be found in many lotions and ointments.

Ethylene oxide is a recognized carcinogen and can be found in fragrances and shampoos.

Talc, which can be found in eye shadow, blush and deodorant, has been linked to ovarian cancer and respiratory problems.

Lead  is a neurotoxin linked to learning and behavioral problems and can be found in lipstick, foundation and over 650 other cosmetics. This is also usually not listed as an ingredient because it’s technically a contaminant.

In the United States, there are no laws that require cosmetic companies to demonstrate the safety of their products, and that’s why learning to read your makeup ingredients, as well as more generally just being aware of what you’re putting on your face is crucial. Beauty may sometimes be pain, but it doesn’t have to be in this case!

The Shaw Spa offers up a variety of different skincare lines and products, but when asking around the office, Revision Skincare’s Intellishade anti-aging tinted moisturizer seemed to be a fan favorite of our fabulous Shaw Center women. This miracle moisturizer not only helps to conceal blemishes, but it reduces fine lines and wrinkles, as well as protects your skin with its UVA and UVB broad-spectrum coverage.

One of our former patients, Deborah, 61, recently started using Intellishade and was able to provide honest feedback to us. We asked, and she answered. Here is what she had to say about Intellishade’s formula.

Q:
What skincare products were you using prior and what objections did you have with them?
A:
I’ve used everything under the sun from drug store products like Neutrogena’s Rapid Wrinkle Repair and Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum, which I found only made my face appear oily and was far too greasy going on. Everything else I have experimented with has shown little to no results and does nothing for the complexion of my skin as far as color correction goes.
Q:
What do you look for in anti-aging skincare?
A:
To appear twenty years younger. Kidding. However, I do expect to see results after consistent use, at least with my finer lines and wrinkles. I want to be able to have a glow without appearing shiny, and ideally, I would like to know that it’s not just correcting, but also preventing further damage from occurring.
Q:
What was your first impression of Revision’s Intellishade moisturizer upon application?
A:
I was extremely impressed with how evenly and easily it went on. The “one shade fits all” promise really rang true. I noticed my redness disappear almost instantly, and it felt incredibly silky smooth on my skin. I couldn’t feel that I had anything on my face, but there was a noticeable difference in the evenness of my skin tone afterwards.
Q:
What was most ideal about this product and would you considering continuing to use it?
A:
I am always on the go, and I especially loved how fast and simple using Intellishade was. Because I am constantly out and about, it’s difficult for me to touch up, but I noticed with this product that the subtle color remained on my face evenly throughout my days without getting blotchy hours later.  My skin is also more sensitive, and a lot of other products have tended to cause minor breakouts, whereas this minimized my pores without seeming to clog them. I would absolutely plan on continuing to use this and am excited to see what it does for my lines and wrinkles once I’ve applied it more long term.

We’re all familiar with the age-old expression, “you are what you eat.” In most cases this is true, and especially when it comes to reviving your skin and achieving a more youthful appearance. Your diet can have a huge impact on how you look and how you feel, and certain foods can affect that much more greatly than others based on their nutrients and antioxidants.  Your face and hair crave certain foods, so do your body a favor and begin the road to beauty by starting with the basics.

Coffee
Many of us already rely on our morning latte to kick start our day, but what if we told you that coffee actually has many more benefits than just keeping you awake at work? Your daily cup of Joe has actually been proven to both tighten and brighten your skin. Caffeine is a known diuretic and can eliminate cellulite when applied topically. Coffee grinds can help to illuminate your skin by acting as an exfoliate. Additionally, it’s been proven that java has compounds that can actually help protect your skin against melanoma.

Watermelon
This summertime snack is full of lycopene, which is an antioxidant that can help skin fight off UV damage. Researchers believe that it contains enough of this phytochemical to equate to an SPF 3, so it’s not a replacement to sunscreen but a supplement.

Pomegranate
The seeds from this power fruit are loaded with antioxidants, like vitamin C, that help in preventing wrinkles, lines and dryness by neutralizing the free radicals that weather skin. This fruit also contains anthocyanins, which helps to increase collagen production and gives skin a firmer look.

Lobster
Shellfish is rich in zinc, which has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to treat a range of skin issues, such as acne. Because zinc accelerates the renewal of skin cells, your skin will actually regenerate after eating this scorpion mermaid.

Walnuts
This tasty nut is bursting with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E, which can both help to keep your hair hydrated, as well as to repair damaged follicles. A handful of these a day, and your locks will be lustrous and rich in color in no time!

You’ve been advised against wearing makeup while working out as long as you’ve had your gym membership. This being that it can clog your pores, which will ultimately lead to break outs and irritated skin. And forget the mascara, unless you have super human qualities that prevent it from running during a sweat sesh.  After all, the goal is to lose weight, not appeal.
However, there are exceptions when you’ve made plans to grab a glass of wine after spin class or have to head to work post workout. There are solutions to maintaining your face in both a simplistic and effective way for these occasions.
Tinted Moisturizer
Opt for an oil-free formula with light to medium coverage. A tinted moisturizer accomplishes a more even complexion than your natural state, but it’s still not as heavy as a regular concealer or foundation.
Waterproof Mascara
Regular mascara might be overly ambitious and even unrealistic, but waterproof makes the world of difference. Try curling them to avoid having them hit the underneath part of your eye during circuits.
Tinted Lip Balm
Just because you’re saving the statement lip for the club doesn’t mean you have to entirely forego flirting with color. Try a tinted balm that will help to not only keep your pout hydrated but accentuated.  Go for a light shade with a shear base to achieve an effortless look.
Brows
Having well-groomed eyebrows can really perk up your appearance. Brush them out and use minimal shadow if you tend to fill them in. Setting them with an eyebrow gel is recommended to avoid having them rebel during cardio.

Summer is here and our beauty routines should now be as effortless as ever.  They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. Well then, your eyelashes are the curtains and just as essential to perfect. Sure, there’s hundreds of over the counter makeup products, mascaras and even false eyelashes you can settle for when wanting to achieve a bold lash look, but all of those are just temporary and even sometimes detrimental to your natural lashes. What if we told you that you could render your lashes luscious and long without all that and using Latisse and other natural home remedies? Well, you can!
A Healthy Diet
When do you not hear that a healthy diet can benefit you? It’s true! Lashes are made from keratin which is a type of protein, so ensuring your meals are high in protein can actually help your eyelashes to grow fuller and longer.
Vitamin E
This can actually be a DIY solution by combining one tablespoon of sweet almond oil, one tablespoon olive oil and one capsule of liquid vitamin E. Once you have this mixture, you can apply the serum to your lash line with a Q-tip every night before bed. This will also help to make your lashes healthy and strong.
Grooming
Yes, you can actually groom your eyelashes just as you would comb your hair every day.! We suggest brushing them once a day with an eyelash brush, which will help to distribute the natural oils  through this gentle massage, as well as improve the blood supply.
Latisse
Above all else, Latisse has been proven to be extremely effective in the growth and renewal of eyelashes.  Full, flirty lashes are one of the most feminine qualities in a woman, so why not obtain long-lasting results with Latisse? This FDA  approved treatment not only improves length and fullness but also the darkness of the lashes. You can apply Latisse directly to the lash line nightly for best results.

This month, when you receive Juvederm at the Shaw Center you will be entered to win a free Latisse!

Summer is quickly approaching, which means peeking in that dreaded swimsuit drawer to see what you have to work with for the coming months. However, trying on swimsuits shouldn’t be a negative experience if you know what looks best on your figure. Everyone has a different body type and therefore should capitalize on your unique physique! Feeling sexy poolside just became a whole lot easier. Now, let’s talk fruit!
Pear Shape
J-Lo and Beyoncé adhere to this body shape when they’re trying on their beachwear! The key to figuring out which style suits you best is making sure that you’re able to balance your proportions, while ensuring your bottom half has the coverage it needs. Opt for a plunging neckline or a patterned or colorful top that shifts the eye upward, focusing less on your lower half. If possible, veto any thick-banded bottoms that will just call attention to the area you’re trying to avoid showcasing. A shear sarong draped at your hips will not only add to the look, but also flatter your figure.
Apple Shape
If you’re an apple shape, then you carry most of your weight in your mid-section. Detracting from this area of your body is an easy fix with the right approach. Shirred or gathered fabric helps to eliminate any unwanted clinging to your hips or stomach, while also creating definition in the waist. Luckily for you, high-waisted bottoms are extremely in trend right now and make for the perfect solution to concealing that lower pooch. Whether it’s a retro-inspired swimsuit bottom or pair of high-waisted denim shorts, you’ll instantly feel more confident!
Large Bust
Katy Perry and Brooklyn Decker are examples of women with a bigger bust, and they most definitely rock it. It’s all about finding a way to balance your figure without completely ignoring your womanly assets. Support is crucial with this body type and finding a bikini top with an under wire or molded cups will ensure that your girls stay lifted. You will want to avoid overly embellished tops or ruffles since this will only draw more attention to your chest, taking away from the rest of your gorgeous figure.
Athletic
Alright, this is for all the Cameron Diaz’s out there. This figure is a bit more narrow and straight up and down. Fortunately, creating curves is much easier than hiding them. You have permission to play around with more embellishments and patterns on both the top and bottom. This will create the illusion of dimension. One-piece suits with strategic cutouts are great for creating curves, as well as tie-side bikini bottoms. Less is more with this body type!
The SHAW Center offers a variety of different procedures than can assist in perfecting the swimsuit-ready body you desire. Embrace your figure, but know that there’s always potential to love it even more!

Hair thinning can be attributed to many different things, genetics being one of them. Aging is also a common factor that contributes to hair loss, and you may have been subject to some noticeable changes more recently due to this. Don’t stress, not only is this problem solvable but unfortunately stressing can also lead to thinning hair.  There are a few different routes you can take to get to the root of the problem in beginning to repair your own. Males and females, listen up! This goes for both of you.
Healthy Diet, Healthy Hair
First things first, you’re going to need to watch your diet. While diet alone is not enough to save your hair, it will most definitely help. You are what you eat, and your locks are directly affected by your choice of entrée. Eating lots of protein-rich foods and the healthy kind of fats will nourish your hair and help it to appear both thicker and more lustrous. Opting for foods high in Vitamin B, such as chicken, fish, eggs and spinach will aid in the formation of hair cells.
No Ifs, Ands, Just Oils!
Believe it or not, essential oils used for scalp massages can also prevent hair loss. Coconut oil in particular acts as a sealant by preventing your hair follicles from losing their moisture. Olive oil is also rich in antioxidants and is great in nourishing hair. Because olive oil is rich in vitamin E it will actually promote hair growth. Additionally, almond oil is also beneficial to your hair because it’s so rich in vitamins E, D, iron, magnesium, calcium and fats.  Lavender, cedarwood, thyme and rosemary have also been known to prevent hair loss.
“Brush” It Off
Stress is a leading factor in hair loss, and while stress is also inevitable, it can be controlled. As the wise Taylor Swift once said, “Shake it off!” and look at her-she’s got great hair. Some methods you can adopt in order to prevent the everyday added anxieties include:  meditating, exercise and simply learning how to express yourself.  Meditation allows you to refocus your attention and eliminate any negative thoughts that can crowd your mind. Allowing yourself to vent is crucial in managing stress. Even if you’re not communicating your feelings to someone else, start maintaining a journal as a means to decompress.
These are hopefully all remedies that won’t make you want to pull your hair out, and if all else fails, The SHAW Center has a fully comprehensive hair restoration treatment program for both women and men.
The SHAW Center’s low-level laser therapy is a noninvasive laser treatment administered to the scalp, which helps to stimulate new hair growth. In addition to the laser therapy treatment, The SHAW Center also offers at-home laser hair loss devices. These hand-held “laser combs” provide phototherapy to the scalp to enhance the results from the in-office laser.
