There are many products and treatments available when it comes to reducing the visible signs of aging, but there is nothing quite like Sculptra® aesthetic. Referred to by some physicians as “Face lift in a bottle”, Sculptra® aesthetic represents a new and unique, minimally invasive option that helps facial skin regain a more youthful and natural-looking appearance.

Over time, our skin loses collagen and fat, reducing its full, firm, youthful appearance. It becomes loose and starts to wrinkle.  This reduction in tissue volume can make cheeks and eyes appear sunken, making us look older than we are.  Injectable Sculptra® aesthetic can help regain a firm texture and restore lost volume by promoting production of your body’s natural collagen in the treated areas. Sculptra® aesthetic is a safe, synthetic, and biocompatible material that is injected below the surface of the skin to correct the effects of fat loss (lipoatrophy).

Sculptra® aesthetic is particularly suited to treating the lower face and differs from conventional line fillers by providing more of a lifting, volumizing result. Sunken skin and wrinkles can be significantly reduced by restoring facial contours without surgery.  This process of natural restructuring of the skin continues long after the course of treatment has been completed.

As with all injectable fillers, technique is a vital component in delivering the best potential outcome, and with Dr. Shaw and his staff having over 20 years of injection experience, you can count on incredible results.

The SHAW Center is running a special on Sculptra right now where you can save $200 when you purchase a minimum of two viles. You can also earn an extra $20 off with a Galderma Reward certificate when you sign up for the Aspire Rewards Program at www.aspirerewards.comprior to your injection appointment. Upon completion of your two vile injection session, you’ll be one step closer to VIP Club Membership where you’ll earn a $50 Galderma Reward for a future appointment.

The perks don’t end there! For every new Aspire Rewards Member the month of October, Galderma will donate $25 to National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.

Fall season is officially here, and with that comes a heightened chance of catching the flu. The changing seasons can take a toll on your body, and that’s why prioritizing your immune system is essential in the coming months. We’ve all been told that your diet has a major impact on your overall health, but there are some grocery store items that are especially necessary to add to your cart when looking out for yourself.
Blueberries
A compound known as pterostilbene that is found in blueberries can be incredibly beneficial for your body’s immune system when coupled with vitamin D. In addition, blueberries have been found to boost brainpower in that they contain high levels of compounds called polyphenolics,
Egg Yolks
While the egg white trend has taken off in more recent years, it’s actually been discovered that the yolk isn’t so bad after all. Egg yolks are jam packed with minerals, like zinc and selenium, which are essential in supporting a healthy immune function.
Green Peas
No more pushing your peas to the side of your dish because these little guys are bursting with vitamins. They are not only a great source of vitamins A and C, but are full of fiber, which can help fight off infection.
Oysters
Yep, it’s true. These underwater warriors are rich in zinc, which employs an antiviral effect. They are especially helpful in healing wounds.
Ginger
Good thing this root is present in most fall-flavored indulgences anyway because it too helps to prevent your cold from taking hold of you. Gingerol, the active constituent in ginger, can help decrease chronic pain and also possesses cholesterol-lowering properties.
Broccoli
This green giant is high in antioxidants and glutathione, which can help to combat an illness.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. It’s not just about acknowledging breast cancer as a whole, but making sure that the necessary steps are taken in order to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages. The SHAW Center is committed to making sure that all possible preventative measures are taken so that you can avoid scheduling the one consultation we never want you to have to make.

In the mirror:
Standing undressed in front of the mirror, with your arms relaxed by your sides, look for any skin puckering, dimpling, sores, or discoloration. Inspect your nipples and look for any sores, peeling, or change in the direction of the nipples.

Then with your hands on your hips, press down firmly to tighten the chest muscles beneath your breasts and turn side to side to examine the outer part of your breasts.
Next, lean towards the mirror while rolling your shoulders and elbows forward In order to tighten your chest muscles. Once your breasts fall forward, pay attention to any changes in the shape or contour of your breasts.

Now, clasp your hands behind your head and press forward. Again, turn from side to side to check the outside portion of your breasts, as well as the border underneath. You may need to lift your breasts to see this area.

Place your thumb and forefinger on the tissue surrounding the nipple and pull outward toward the end of the nipple to check for any possible signs of discharge.

In the shower:
Make sure you’re feeling for any changes in your breasts by checking for any lumps or thickening in your underarm area. Sometimes it is easier to detect these changes when your hands are slippery with soap and water. Put your left hand on your hip and reach over with your right hand to feel in the left armpit. Repeat with the opposite side.

While your hands are still soapy, raise one arm behind your head to spread out the breast tissue, and use the flat part of your fingers from the opposite hand to press gently into the breast. Moving from the bra line to collarbone, follow an up-and-down pattern along the breast.

Lying down:
When lying down, place a small pillow under your right shoulder while putting your right hand behind your head.

Next, place your left hand on the upper portion of your right breast while fingers are together and flat. Following the perimeter of your breast and keeping your fingers flat, massage in circular motions feeling around for any strange lumps. Continue in this pattern until you’ve felt the entire breast. Make sure to feel the upper outer areas that extend into your armpit.

Place your fingers flat and directly on top of your nipple. Feel beneath the nipple for any changes. Gently press your nipple inward. It should move easily.

         Just In Case
If you do discover any changes in your breast, you should see your health care provider as soon as possible for further examination. Changes you should be looking out for include:

-An area that is distinctly different from any other area on either breast
-A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm that persists through the menstrual cycle
-A change in the size, shape, or contour of the breast
-A mass or lump, which may feel as small as a pea
-A marble-like area under the skin
-A change in the feel or appearance of the skin on the breast or nipple (dimpled, puckered, scaly, or inflamed)
-Bloody or clear fluid discharge from the nipples
-Redness of the skin on the breast or nipple

Give your eyes the refreshed look they deserve by alleviating dark circles and giving those bags the boot. We can’t always prevent our body’s natural reaction to our hectic schedules and response to tiredness, but we can at least find ways to help keep it from affecting our appearance.
Many different variables can contribute to the cause of tired eyes, such as seasonal allergies that trigger the release of histamines in the body, which in turn can inflame blood vessels and cause swelling.  Genetics can also have a hand in causing dark circles. If you inherit thin under eye skin it can be more evident when blood accumulates there from slowed circulation. Also, age is a key player in the cause since over time skin naturally loses collagen and thins, which will more prominently expose veins.
Sweet Dreams
You may want to try doubling up on pillows for added support when you sleep to keep blood from building up under your eyes.  When you wake up, try applying a cold compress, such as frozen spoons underneath your eyes for about five minutes to constrict the blood vessels. You can also try using an eye cream with caffeine before calling it a night.
Hide And Go Seek
You can always opt for the temporary method of covering up with makeup. Use a concealer a couple shades lighter than your natural skin tone, and apply a powder the same shade as your skin over top. No need to get crazy with highlighter, just a quick fix.
Collagen Cures
For most of us, having thin skin is the overriding issue and cause of dark circles. Try implementing a collagen-building cream into your beauty regime to help restore your skin. We recommend using one with retinol. Here at The SHAW Center we carry the ZO Skin Health product line, which typically employs this ingredient for anti-aging purposes.
The SHAW Center also offers eyelid surgery, which is a procedure that can create more youthful looking eyes. It removes excess eye skin, muscle or fat deposits to address sagging eyelids or bags beneath the eyes.

Rhinoplasty, or more informally known as a “nose job,” is one of the most common procedures performed here at The SHAW Center.  This surgery can be an ideal option for those hoping to correct the size of their nose, eliminate a bump, change the shape of the tip or bridge or narrow or widen the nostrils. Whether you have been unhappy with the appearance of your nose you entire life or endured a recent injury resulting in the aesthetic of your nose, rhinoplasty can help both the appearance of the nose, as well as improve one’s breathing.
The Best Candidates
A good candidate for this procedure is one who has realistic expectations about the outcome of this particular surgery. A nose job should never be sought after in order to make someone else happy or to conform to an ideal. It’s a very personal procedure and should be pursued to achieve changes that appeal to only you.
It’s recommended that the patient be over the age of 15 since it is important that the patient’s face is no longer growing or maturing when the surgery is performed.  Those who wish to pursue rhinoplasty should be non-smokers and in overall good health.
The Actual Procedure
This procedure can be done in either an open or closed approach. The decision is contingent upon what Dr. Shaw feels is the best approach based on your consultation. The goal is to personalize the procedure to the patient in order to ensure the best results are achieved.
In a closed approach there are no external incisions, and instead they are made within the nose, which helps in avoiding external scarring. Many are eligible for this style and it is recommended for those seeking help with minor breathing difficulties.
The open approach is performed when Dr. Shaw feels that the patient requires extensive alterations to the tip of the nose, needs detailed work within the dorsum or has severe breathing issues. This technique requires a small incision across the bridge of tissue between the nostrils very carefully.
Recovering From Rhinoplasty
Typically the recovery process is extremely manageable. You can expect to wear a splint and bandages for about a week after the procedure, and your face will feel swollen and the area around your eyes and nose will be bruised for several days. We recommend using a cold compress to minimize swelling and reduce pain. It’s also best to keep your head elevated and relatively still the first few days post surgery. This is your time to relax, recover and heal because after this down time you will feel especially motivated to get out and conquer the world!

Dry skin is not only uncomfortable to the touch, but it can also negatively affect your appearance by rendering a rough complexion even after makeup is applied. Dry skin can be caused by weather changes, harsh soaps and sun damage among many other things. We’ve all experienced this inevitable annoyance, and sometimes it’s not as easily fixed with moisturizers. However, there’s many other natural remedies you can practice to correct cracked skin.

Olive Oil Cleanser
Olive oil is an ideal natural oil to implement into your beauty routine when you begin facing dryness. Gently rub the oil into your skin and place a warm cloth over your face afterwards until it cools off. This alternative method leaves your skin hydrated without wiping your skin of its natural oils.

Avocado and Honey Face Mask
This all-natural home remedy calls for just two ingredients: avocado and honey.  Both of these staples are particularly moisturizing and are packed with essential nutrients that will help to sooth your parched skin when applied topically.

Humidify Your Room
This simple adjustment can make the world of difference. Humidifiers release large amounts of water into the air that your skin can absorb while you sleep. Weather conditions can easily suck your skin of all its natural moister, so make the plans to restore your complexion through this must-have bedside accessory.

Bye, Bye, Washcloth
This may seem like a crazy gesture considering you use your washcloth daily to cleanse your face, but it’s fact of the matter is it’s just too abrasive for your skin. Even if you don’t use a towel to scrub your face, avoid using one to just dry. Instead try using your hands or gentle cleansing brush to lather your face wash, and a soft cotton cloth to pat dry your face dry.

When all else fails, you can find your moisturizing mantra here at The SHAW Center where we offer a variety of different skincare lines with highly effective ingredients that produce incredible results.
